Bengaluru-Based Semiconductor Metrology Startup Makr Microsystems Raises Rs 10.2 Crore in Seed Round

Bengaluru-based semiconductor metrology startup Makr Microsystems has raised Rs 10.2 crore in a seed funding round led by frontier-tech venture capital firm Bluehill VC, with participation from Artha Venture Fund.

Founded by Ashwin Lal, Makr Microsystems is developing nanoscale 3D subsurface metrology technology designed to help semiconductor manufacturers inspect and measure hidden structures and defects beneath chip surfaces without damaging the semiconductor.

The startup’s technology combines Acoustic Atomic Force Microscopy (AAFM), optical tomography and 3D data analytics to provide detailed insights into structures that are difficult to examine using conventional inspection methods.

Funding to Accelerate Technology Development and Commercialisation

Makr Microsystems plans to deploy the newly raised capital towards technology development, customer validation and commercialisation of its semiconductor metrology solutions.

The company’s initial applications include advanced semiconductor packaging, hybrid bonding, buried interfaces, chiplet interconnects and defect detection. These areas are becoming increasingly important as semiconductor architectures evolve toward more complex and three-dimensional designs.

As chipmakers increasingly adopt advanced packaging techniques and 3D structures, the ability to inspect subsurface interfaces and identify defects without damaging components could play a critical role in improving manufacturing quality and yields.

Focus on Next-Generation Semiconductor Manufacturing

Bluehill VC’s investment reflects its focus on backing deeptech companies working on complex challenges across critical technology sectors. The venture capital firm recently closed its maiden fund at Rs 400 crore.

For Makr Microsystems, the latest funding marks a step toward developing semiconductor equipment and technology from India for global markets.

The company aims to build globally relevant semiconductor technology from India, addressing emerging requirements as chip architectures become more sophisticated and manufacturing processes increasingly shift toward three-dimensional structures.

With its focus on nanoscale subsurface inspection, Makr Microsystems is positioning itself within India’s growing semiconductor and deeptech ecosystem, where advanced manufacturing, packaging and inspection technologies are expected to become increasingly important.
