BacAlt Biosciences Raises ₹18 crore to Build Sustainable Bio-Based Ingredient Platform

Biotech startup BacAlt Biosciences has secured ₹18 crore in a pre-seed funding round led by Avaana Capital, with additional participation from Lubrizol InnoVentures.

The funds will be used to scale research and development, establish pilot-scale production units, expand its talent base, and execute go-to-market strategies aimed at global expansion.

Founded in 2023 by Shruti Kutmutia and Pranav Nair, BacAlt is developing bio-based polymers and specialty ingredients through energy-efficient fermentation. By leveraging circular feedstocks and agro-industrial waste, the company is creating sustainable, cost-effective alternatives to petrochemical-derived ingredients. Its non-sterile fermentation process further reduces manufacturing costs, offering an edge over conventional bio-manufacturing.

BacAlt’s solutions are designed for a wide range of industries, including home care, personal care, agrochemicals, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals. A key focus is addressing the global challenge of microplastic pollution—most household and personal care formulations today contain microplastics, and BacAlt is working to replace them with biodegradable, eco-friendly ingredients.

“BacAlt’s mission is to transform India into a hub for circular and bio-based specialty ingredients,” said Shruti Kutmutia, Co-Founder of BacAlt. “We are building scalable solutions that reduce import reliance and position India as a bio-manufacturing leader on the global stage.”

By integrating microbiology, industrial bio-manufacturing, and advanced fermentation methods, BacAlt is paving the way for the next generation of sustainable, high-performance ingredients that can power eco-friendly innovations worldwide.
