Every e-commerce founder knows the thrill of acquiring a new customer. But what happens after that first purchase often determines whether a business truly succeeds.
For Rahul kumar, Founder of Retner, this overlooked challenge became the inspiration behind building an AI-powered customer retention platform that is quietly changing how brands engage with their customers.
Before stepping into entrepreneurship, Rahul was working as a Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) consultant for Vodafone UK. A Computer Engineering graduate of 2017, his role involved understanding customer journeys, improving digital experiences, and helping businesses convert more visitors into buyers.
Yet, despite working with different businesses, one pattern kept repeating itself.
“Companies were spending aggressively to acquire customers, but very few were investing in retaining them,” Rahul recalls.
Brands celebrated rising customer acquisition numbers while repeat purchases remained disappointingly low. Marketing budgets continued to grow, but customer loyalty wasn’t growing alongside them.
That gap planted the seed for what would eventually become Retner.
Finding Opportunity in an Overlooked Problem
Most e-commerce brands have sophisticated tools to attract customers, but Rahul noticed they lacked the intelligence to understand what those customers wanted after their first purchase.
Instead of building another marketing automation platform, he wanted to solve a much deeper problem.
“What if businesses could actually understand customer intent before reaching out?”
That question became the foundation of Retner.
The startup uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze customer behaviour, identify buying patterns, and predict the most relevant engagement for every individual. Rather than treating every customer the same, Retner helps brands communicate differently with different users based on their interests, purchasing history, and intent.
The result is a customer experience that feels less like marketing and more like a personalised conversation.
Replacing Broadcast Marketing with Meaningful Conversations
Traditional marketing often relies on sending the same message to thousands of customers at once.
Rahul believes that approach belongs to the past.
Today’s customers expect relevance. They don’t want promotional messages simply because a brand has their phone number or email address—they want communication that actually makes sense for them.
Retner addresses this by combining AI-driven intent scoring with multiple engagement channels including WhatsApp, AI voice agents, SMS, email, and Instagram.
The platform identifies when a customer is most likely to engage and delivers personalised communication instead of generic promotional campaigns.
This shift from mass messaging to intelligent engagement has helped several brands dramatically improve customer retention.
According to Rahul, businesses that once struggled with repeat purchases have seen retention rates improve from nearly 2 percent to as high as 40 percent after implementing Retner’s AI-powered workflows.
Building AI Responsibly
Creating technology that understands customer behaviour naturally comes with concerns around privacy.
Rahul says building trust has been just as important as building the product itself.
Retner has been designed to comply with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act while ensuring customer information remains protected.
Rather than exposing user data, the platform generates behavioural insights that help businesses make smarter decisions without compromising privacy.
“We’re not sharing customer data,” Rahul explains. “We’re helping businesses understand behaviour while ensuring customer information remains secure.”
As conversations around responsible AI continue to grow, Rahul believes privacy-first technology will become a necessity rather than a differentiator.
Delivering Results That Businesses Can Measure
Like many AI startups, Retner’s success ultimately depends on one thing—business outcomes.
Rahul points to Alpino Foods as one of the company’s strongest success stories.
Using Retner’s AI-powered calling agents, the brand reportedly achieved an impressive 33x return on investment. Its personalised WhatsApp campaigns generated another 18x ROI, demonstrating the impact of engaging customers with relevance instead of volume.
For Rahul, these numbers validate a simple belief: customer retention deserves as much attention as customer acquisition.
Making Enterprise AI Accessible for Growing Brands
While many customer engagement platforms are built primarily for large enterprises, Rahul wanted Retner to be equally accessible for startups and growing businesses.
He believes early-stage companies should have access to enterprise-grade AI without paying enterprise-level prices.
To help brands experience the platform before making a commitment, Retner offers a 30-day trial, allowing businesses to evaluate its impact on customer engagement and retention firsthand.
“Our objective is simple,” Rahul says. “We want businesses to experience measurable results before asking them to invest.”
A Founder’s Lesson: Validate Before You Build
Like many entrepreneurs, Rahul’s journey has been shaped by experimentation, learning, and constant customer feedback.
Looking back, he believes one lesson stands above everything else.
Too many founders spend months—or even years—building products before knowing whether customers actually need them.
His advice is straightforward: validate early.
Talk to customers, build a prototype, gather feedback, and refine the product before investing significant time and resources.
That approach helped Retner find its product-market fit and continues to shape every product decision the company makes today.
Looking Ahead
Retner has recently secured its seed funding, although the company has chosen not to disclose the amount publicly.
With fresh momentum, Rahul is now preparing for the next stage of growth and plans to raise another funding round within the coming six months. The focus will be on strengthening the platform’s AI capabilities, expanding its customer base, and accelerating innovation in intent intelligence.
As AI rapidly transforms the way businesses communicate with customers, Rahul believes the future belongs to companies that understand people—not just data.
For him, Retner is more than a customer engagement platform. It is an attempt to redefine how brands build lasting relationships in an increasingly digital world.
In an era where acquiring customers has become easier than keeping them, Rahul Sundesha is betting that the next generation of successful businesses will be built not on louder marketing, but on smarter conversations.
