Deeptech startup Vikra Ocean Tech has raised $1 million in a seed funding round co-led by Finvolve and India Accelerator. The capital infusion marks a significant milestone for the Chennai-based firm as it seeks to disrupt the underwater robotics landscape with homegrown alternatives to imported technology.
Strategic Expansion and Manufacturing
The startup plans to deploy the fresh capital to scale its product manufacturing capabilities and fortify its sales pipeline, specifically targeting Defence and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). A primary goal of this fiscal phase is the establishment of recurring revenue streams through its modular ecosystem.
Modular Robotics Ecosystem
Founded in 2019 by Rajeuv Govindan and Rajagurunathan Krishnasamy, Vikra Ocean Tech has developed a comprehensive suite of maritime solutions designed for interoperability. Their portfolio includes:
-
Deep-water ROVs: Remotely operated vehicles for complex subsea tasks.
-
Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASV): Unmanned craft for offshore exploration.
-
Amphibious Crawlers: Specialized robots for littoral and shoreline operations.
-
AI Stack: Indigenous imaging, lighting, and communication systems that enhance underwater visibility and data transmission.
Reducing Import Dependency
A core mission of the company is to bolster India’s “Aatmanirbhar” (self-reliant) initiatives by reducing the nation’s reliance on expensive, foreign-made underwater robotics. By utilizing a unified control platform, Vikra offers mission-ready systems tailored for hydrographic surveys, subsea inspections, and disaster response.
“Our integrated hardware stack is supported by indigenous cameras and AI-based video enhancement tools, enabling simplified and scalable operations,” the company stated in a press release.
Market Traction and Competition
Vikra Ocean Tech has already demonstrated significant technical prowess, developing deep-ocean hardware rated for depths of up to 2,000 meters. Its credibility in the defense sector is further evidenced by two iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) grants awarded by the Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard.
While the startup is gaining momentum, it enters a competitive landscape of domestic players, including:
-
Coratia Technologies
-
Planys Technologies
-
EyeROV
-
Sagar Defence Engineering
As the demand for offshore marine exploration and maritime security grows, Vikra’s focus on a cost-effective, end-to-end hardware stack positions it as a key contender in the evolving global blue economy.
