Zerocircle, the Pune-based materials science startup leading the charge against ocean plastic, has raised ₹5 crore in a pre-Series A funding round. The investment was co-led by 3one4 Capital and Rainmatter Capital (the climate-focused fund by Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath), with participation from a select group of institutional and angel investors.
This round follows a significant ₹20 crore ($2.3 million) raise led by Rainmatter, which featured high-profile participants including early-stage VCs like 1Crowd, VC Grid, 7th Gen Ventures, and acclaimed environmental advocate Trudie Styler.
The new capital will be deployed to accelerate deeptech research and scale production of the company’s seaweed-based “biopolymers.” These materials are specifically designed to replace petrochemical-based plastics in the highest-volume categories of the $1.1 trillion global packaging market.
The Seaweed Solution: Nature’s High-Performance Polymer
Founded in 2020 by Neha Jain, Zerocircle is tackling the global microplastic crisis by looking to the ocean. The company uses sustainably farmed seaweed to create resins and coatings that mimic the properties of plastic—barrier strength, transparency, and heat-sealability—without the toxic legacy.
Unlike conventional plastics or even some bioplastics like PLA (which often require industrial composting), Zerocircle’s materials are marine-degradable and home-compostable.
Why Seaweed?
-
Regenerative Growth: Seaweed requires no freshwater, fertilizer, or land to grow.
-
Carbon Sequestration: It naturally absorbs approximately 120 kg of $CO_2$ per tonne.
-
Clean Chemistry: Zerocircle’s “low-energy green processing” avoids the harsh chemicals and “forever chemicals” (PFAS) found in traditional takeaway packaging.
Strategic Focus: Targeting the QSR and Foodservice Giants
Zerocircle is aiming for the “hardest-to-replace” plastic categories where regulatory pressure is highest. Their current and upcoming portfolio includes:
-
QSR Packaging: Coated paperboards for hamburger boxes, fried food containers, and bakery trays.
-
Barrier Coatings: Water-resistant and grease-resistant coatings for hot/cold beverage cups and food wraps.
-
Flexible Films: Cutlery pouches and dissolvable wraps that leave zero microplastic residue.
Global Impact and Scaling
Over the past year, Zerocircle has successfully replaced approximately 1.6 million plastic food containers. Their footprint is already global, with active deployments in India, the Netherlands, and the Benelux region of Europe.
With the sustainable packaging segment projected to reach $530–560 billion by 2030, Zerocircle is positioning itself as a “drop-in” solution that can be used on existing plastic manufacturing machinery, reducing the need for new capital expenditure by manufacturers.
“Our materials challenge the status quo that goes beyond just visible plastic pollution. Fueled by strict anti-plastic policies, the demand for high-performing, clean solutions is already strong,” says Neha Jain, Founder of Zerocircle.
