Fintech startup Jupiter Money is quietly but confidently building out its financial superapp vision—and its latest milestone might be the most important yet.
The Bengaluru-based firm has been granted a corporate agency license by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). This now allows Jupiter to directly distribute both life and general insurance products through its app—marking its official entry into the insurance sector.
But Jupiter isn’t just offering another menu of insurance options. True to its tech DNA, the company is aiming to bring curated and embedded insurance experiences to its users.
Think:
– Term life and health covers from trusted partners
– Travel insurance linked to card activity
– Cyber fraud protection tied to digital payments
– Device insurance for users shopping online
The goal? Make insurance less about paperwork and more about seamless protection based on real user behavior.
From Neobank to Financial OS
This move fits squarely within Jupiter’s broader game plan—to evolve into a full-stack financial services provider. The company secured its NBFC licence in 2023, followed by a Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) licence in 2024. The corporate agency license adds yet another pillar to its growing financial architecture.
A Jupiter spokesperson told IST, “Insurance is often seen as complex or optional. We want to flip that—by making it contextual, intuitive, and actually useful in moments when users need it most.”
The Bigger Picture
Founded by Jitendra Gupta, Jupiter was last valued at around $710 million during its $86 million Series C round in December 2021. It has raised over $160 million to date from marquee investors like QED Investors, Peak XV, and Matrix Partners.
Jupiter now joins the likes of Freo, which also secured a corporate agency license in late 2023, in a growing league of fintechs eyeing insurance as a natural extension of their user-first financial offerings.
As India’s digital consumers mature, they’re not just looking for banking—they’re looking for simplified financial wellness. And it seems Jupiter is betting big on becoming the operating system for that very future.
