Moving Beyond Fashion: How Archana Khosla Burman Is Building ZONE to Inspire India’s Next Generation of Active Kids

India’s children’s apparel market has traditionally revolved around casual wear, occasion outfits, and school uniforms. However, as sports participation, fitness awareness, and active lifestyles become an integral part of childhood, parents are beginning to seek apparel that goes beyond style—products designed specifically to support movement, comfort, and performance. Recognizing this emerging shift, Archana Khosla Burman, Co-Founder of ZONE, along with her sister and co-founder Niharika Khosla Sehgal, set out to build what they describe as India’s first premium activewear brand exclusively for children aged 7–14 years.

The idea behind ZONE was born from a simple but significant observation. While India’s activewear industry had evolved rapidly for adults, there was virtually no premium brand dedicated to children who spend their days balancing school, sports, extracurricular activities, and outdoor play. As parents themselves, the founders noticed that children were often wearing clothing never designed for such dynamic lifestyles. This gap inspired them to create a brand focused entirely on combining comfort, functionality, performance, and style for growing children, while encouraging them to stay active and develop a lifelong love for fitness and sports.

Their conviction was further strengthened through extensive conversations with parents, coaches, and young athletes. These interactions revealed three clear market trends shaping the future of children’s apparel. First, children today are participating in sports and structured fitness activities more than ever before. Second, parents are becoming increasingly conscious of fabric quality, durability, comfort, and functionality rather than simply choosing fashionable clothing. Finally, despite growing demand, the market continued to offer products that were largely scaled-down versions of adult sportswear instead of apparel specifically designed around how children move and perform. These insights gave the founders confidence that the market was ready for a dedicated kids’ activewear brand.

At the heart of ZONE’s philosophy lies a deep understanding of how modern parenting has evolved. Today’s parents want products that actively support their children’s health, comfort, and confidence. This changing mindset has influenced every aspect of the brand’s product development. Rather than designing apparel purely for aesthetics, ZONE focuses on creating lightweight, breathable, flexible, and durable garments capable of supporting children through sports, outdoor activities, fitness classes, and everyday movement. The collections are designed not only to keep children comfortable but also to provide parents with confidence that they are investing in thoughtfully crafted products built to last.

Every ZONE collection begins with observing how children naturally move. Whether they are playing football, attending dance classes, cycling outdoors, or simply enjoying playtime, the design process revolves around enabling unrestricted movement. The company carefully selects moisture-managing, breathable fabrics that remain soft on children’s skin while paying close attention to fit, flexibility, and durability. Since children’s clothing experiences significantly more wear and tear than adult apparel, longevity remains a critical consideration throughout product development.

Building a premium activewear brand exclusively for children has also presented unique business challenges. Unlike adult consumers, children rapidly outgrow their clothing, making durability, value, and product quality essential purchase considerations for parents. To address these realities, ZONE has invested heavily in developing high-performance fabrics, refining garment fits, and incorporating thoughtful design details that enhance comfort and freedom of movement. At the same time, the founders have worked to educate parents on the value of investing in purpose-built activewear that improves children’s comfort, confidence, and overall sporting experience rather than viewing it as another fashion purchase.

While India’s kidswear market is increasingly competitive, Archana believes ZONE’s differentiation lies in its singular focus. Rather than extending an existing fashion label into sportswear, the company has built its identity entirely around movement. Every decision—from fabric selection and garment construction to fit and functionality—is guided by the needs of active children. For the founders, premium does not simply mean premium pricing; it represents exceptional quality, thoughtful design, and an experience that genuinely improves how children feel while staying active.

The founders also recognize that building a successful consumer brand requires much more than quality products. Long-term success depends on establishing trust with parents while creating an emotional connection with children. ZONE aims to become a trusted partner for families by consistently delivering reliable, functional products while simultaneously creating apparel that children genuinely enjoy wearing because it is stylish, comfortable, and empowering. Beyond apparel, the brand hopes to contribute to broader conversations around children’s health, fitness, and active living.

This larger purpose becomes even more relevant as digital lifestyles continue to reshape childhood experiences. With increasing screen time limiting outdoor activities, Archana believes brands have an important role to play in encouraging healthier habits. While clothing alone cannot change behaviour, thoughtfully designed activewear can inspire participation by making sports and outdoor play more enjoyable. Through its products, ZONE hopes to motivate children to embrace physical activity while supporting families in nurturing healthier lifestyles.

Like many young consumer brands, ZONE’s entrepreneurial journey has reinforced several important lessons. The founders believe sustainable businesses are built by solving genuine customer problems rather than introducing products for the sake of novelty. Listening to customers, continuously improving, and maintaining transparent communication have become central to the company’s growth strategy. Equally important has been understanding that trust is earned gradually through consistent product quality and customer experience rather than marketing alone.

Sustainability also forms an important part of ZONE’s long-term vision. Rather than approaching sustainability as a standalone initiative, the company focuses on designing durable garments that naturally reduce the frequency of replacement and promote responsible consumption. The brand also collaborates with manufacturing partners that prioritize quality and fair labour practices while planning to incorporate more sustainable materials and responsible sourcing methods as it continues to scale.

Looking ahead, Archana sees enormous potential in India’s children’s activewear segment. As participation in sports and extracurricular activities continues to grow, parents are expected to increasingly seek specialised apparel designed specifically for active lifestyles. Future purchasing decisions, she believes, will be influenced not just by pricing but also by fabric technology, sustainability, functionality, and product performance. These evolving consumer expectations are likely to transform children’s activewear into a distinct category within India’s broader apparel industry.

For Archana Khosla Burman, however, the ambition extends far beyond building a successful apparel company. Through ZONE, she hopes to inspire children to lead healthier, more confident, and more active lives. If the brand encourages even one child to spend more time outdoors, discover a new sport, or develop lifelong healthy habits, she believes it will have achieved its true purpose. Ultimately, ZONE aspires to become synonymous not only with premium kids’ activewear but also with confidence, movement, and joyful childhood experiences across India.
