Introduction
Biofuels are clean, renewable and sustainable fuels produced from biomass, organic and agricultural resources. They are designed to act as alternatives to fossil fuels such as petrol, diesel, CNG and LPG.
One example is CBG, or compressed biogas, which not only serves as a fuel but also generates a useful byproduct called digestate. This digestate can replace chemical fertilizers, making biofuels beneficial beyond just energy production. In this way, biofuels support both clean energy generation and sustainable agriculture.
The Vision Behind Founding Jivoule Biofuels
The Director of Jivoule Biofuels, Chandrasekhar Nandigama, ventured into clean energy out of a deep passion for sustainability, climate change and green energy. The mission is clear: to ensure that the next generation lives in a clean and green environment, eats healthy food, breathes clean air, uses green energy and progresses through a circular economy.
This vision of long-term environmental impact became the foundation for building the clean tech startup.
Why Biofuels Are Better Than Regular Fuels
Biofuels generate low or near-zero carbon emissions compared to fossil fuels, which are major contributors to climate change and global warming. By reducing carbon output, biofuels help address one of the most pressing global challenges.
They also help convert waste into value by generating wealth from waste. Since biofuels are produced indigenously, they improve India’s energy security by reducing dependence on foreign imports of fossil fuels. This brings economic benefits to the country as well.
In addition, biofuels reduce air, water and soil pollution, which directly improves public health and environmental quality.
Are Sustainable Practices Really More Expensive?
There is a common perception that sustainable practices cost more. However, the founder believes this does not have to be the case. If the government, industry and society share a common goal and responsibility towards sustainability, biofuels can become more affordable than fossil fuels.
With innovative business models, new technologies, supportive government policies and social adaptability, sustainable energy solutions can be both practical and cost-effective.
The Most Rewarding Part of the Journey
For Chandrasekhar Nandigama, the most enjoyable part of building Jivoule Biofuels has been the constant learning and growth that comes with tackling challenges every day. Creating a sustainable impact on the planet while overcoming obstacles brings a strong sense of fulfillment and purpose.
The Biggest Challenges in Building a Biofuels Startup
One of the hardest parts of building the company has been access to capital. The biofuels sector is still niche and nascent, and it requires significant funding to scale.
Another challenge has been the slow translation of government policies and schemes into action. While policies may exist on paper, their implementation often moves at a slow pace, creating additional burdens for entrepreneurs trying to move forward.
Funding and Grant Support
Jivoule Biofuels has received several notable grants and recognitions. The company received grants from IIIT-Hyderabad and the MoHUA Swachhata Startup grant through IIT-Kanpur. It also secured the Citi Bank SIL grant through IIT-Kanpur.
In addition, the startup was selected for a NITI AAYOG grant along with equity funding, providing further support for its growth in the clean energy sector.
Advice to Young Startup Founders in India
Chandrasekhar Nandigama’s advice to young entrepreneurs is, “If you have a dream and a vision to create a positive impact, pursue it without fear. Trust that the universe will support your path.”
