From Race Tracks to Rebuilding Trust in India’s Used Two-Wheeler Market: The RoamPrime Story of Balaji Mohan

Building a startup is rarely a straight road, and few founders understand that better than Balaji Mohan, Founder of RoamPrime. His entrepreneurial journey spans high-speed racing circuits, corporate leadership, automotive testing, and one of India’s largest doorstep car servicing networks before evolving into a technology-driven full stack used two wheeler brand.

In this exclusive conversation with Indian Startup Times, Balaji shares how setbacks became stepping stones, why trust remains the biggest challenge in India’s used vehicle ecosystem, and how RoamPrime is leveraging technology, AI, and data to redefine the customer experience while preparing for nationwide expansion.

From National Racing Champion to Automotive Entrepreneur

Long before launching startups, Balaji’s passion revolved around motorsports. At just 19 years old, he entered national-level car racing, competing in the prestigious four-wheel drive IJTC category. Racing wasn’t merely a hobby—it became the foundation of his deep understanding of automotive engineering, vehicle dynamics, suspension systems, and aerodynamics.

Alongside his racing career, Balaji built a successful corporate journey at Support.com, where he spent nearly five years before rising to become Director for India. Simultaneously, he collaborated with leading automotive manufacturers including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra, conducting endurance testing, vehicle evaluations, and performance validation.

These experiences gave him first-hand insight into vehicle quality, engineering standards, and customer expectations—knowledge that would later shape his entrepreneurial ventures.

Building DrWheelZ: India’s Doorstep Car Service Revolution

In 2015, Balaji transformed his automotive expertise into entrepreneurship by founding DrWheelz, a doorstep car servicing platform designed to eliminate one of the industry’s biggest pain points: customer trust.

Traditional vehicle servicing often left customers uncertain about repairs, pricing, and service quality. DrWheelz introduced convenience and transparency by bringing professional servicing directly to customers’ doorsteps.

The idea resonated strongly with the market.

Over the years, Doctor Wheels expanded rapidly through a franchise-led model, reaching more than 3,000 touchpoints across India and operating across 26 cities—from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

The startup became one of India’s largest distributed automotive service networks, demonstrating the massive demand for organized vehicle servicing.

When COVID Changed Everything

Like countless businesses in the mobility sector, DrWheelz faced unprecedented disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The business model, which relied heavily on physical operations and service delivery, struggled during prolonged lockdowns and shifting consumer behavior.

Rather than viewing the setback as the end of his entrepreneurial journey, Balaji chose to identify the next major opportunity in the mobility ecosystem.

That opportunity lay in India’s rapidly growing pre-owned two-wheeler market.

Identifying the Trust Gap in Used Two-Wheelers

While the organized used-car ecosystem was becoming increasingly structured, Balaji, Anmol & Shubham noticed that India’s used two-wheeler segment remained highly fragmented.

Customers struggled with unreliable sellers, inaccurate vehicle information, manipulated odometer readings, hidden defects, and inconsistent refurbishment quality.

They believed the biggest problem wasn’t demand—it was trust.

Together with co-founders Anmol and Shubham, they launched RoamPrime with the mission of creating a transparent, a full stack technology-first pre-owned motorcycles and scooters.

Technology at the Core of RoamPrime

Instead of relying solely on manual inspections, RoamPrime integrates technology and proprietary algorithms into its vehicle evaluation process.

One of its major innovations focuses on estimating the true mileage of pre-owned vehicles—addressing one of the industry’s most common concerns.

Every vehicle undergoes a comprehensive three-layer quality filtration process before reaching customers.

The company has also established refurbishment facilities that ensure every motorcycle meets defined quality standards before being listed for sale.

Beyond vehicle sourcing and refurbishment, RoamPrime operates a full-stack model that includes:

  • Vehicle procurement
  • Inspection and certification
  • Financing support
  • Insurance services
  • After-sales assistance

Balaji believes that combining technology with operational excellence is essential to building long-term customer confidence.

Winning Consumer Trust One Customer at a Time

Launching RoamPrime wasn’t without challenges.

Convincing traditional local dealers to embrace standardized quality practices required significant effort. At the same time, customers needed assurance that buying a pre-owned two-wheeler could be as reliable as purchasing a new one.

RoamPrime addressed this by partnering only with trusted dealers, maintaining complete transparency, and continuously expanding its digital inventory.

As customer confidence grew, so did the company’s reputation.

According to Balaji, trust isn’t created through marketing—it is earned through consistent processes and customer satisfaction.

Fueling Growth Through Seed Funding

RoamPrime has already secured its seed funding, which is being deployed across several strategic areas, including:

  • Building a stronger technology team
  • Enhancing AI capabilities
  • Strengthening the brand
  • Scaling operations
  • Expanding customer acquisition

Technology remains central to the company’s growth strategy.

RoamPrime increasingly uses AI and predictive analytics to improve vehicle assessment, optimize procurement decisions, and deliver a smoother buying experience for customers.

The company is also actively preparing for its next fundraising milestone, with discussions underway for a Series A round.

A Vision Beyond Used Motorcycles

RoamPrime’s ambitions extend well beyond its current operations in Bengaluru.

Balaji envisions expanding into 10–12 major cities by 2027, creating one of India’s largest organized platforms for certified pre-owned two-wheelers.

The company is currently witnessing 50–60% month-on-month growth, and Balaji expects this momentum to accelerate after the upcoming funding round.

Looking further ahead, the long-term roadmap includes an Initial Public Offering (IPO).

RoamPrime is also preparing for the future of mobility by planning to integrate electric two-wheelers into its ecosystem as EV adoption continues to grow across India.

Leadership Principles That Drive RoamPrime

Throughout the conversation, Balaji emphasized that building a startup requires far more than funding and technology.

RoamPrime operates around a set of leadership values that guide every business decision:

  • Focus beats being merely smart.
  • Think from zero and challenge assumptions.
  • Keep the founder’s first thought centered on customers.
  • Prioritize process over short-term profits.
  • Lead with empathy across teams, partners, and customers.

For Balaji, sustainable businesses are built on discipline, consistency, and long-term thinking rather than chasing rapid gains.

A Customer Story That Reinforced the Mission

Among the many customers RoamPrime has served, one story continues to inspire Balaji.

A delivery executive dreamed of owning a TVS RR 310 despite financial constraints. His determination and passion reminded the RoamPrime team why they were building the platform—not merely to sell vehicles, but to make aspirational mobility accessible through trust and transparency.

Moments like these reinforce the company’s purpose and motivate the team to continue improving the ownership experience for every customer.

Looking Ahead

India’s mobility ecosystem continues to evolve rapidly, and the pre-owned two-wheeler market represents one of its largest untapped opportunities.

With deep automotive expertise, technology-led vehicle assessment, a full-stack operating model, and a clear vision for national expansion, RoamPrime aims to become one of the country’s most trusted names in certified pre-owned mobility.

Balaji Mohan’s journey—from racing tracks to scaling a nationwide automotive service network, overcoming the setbacks of a global pandemic, and now building a technology-driven mobility platform—reflects the resilience, adaptability, and customer-first mindset that define successful entrepreneurship.

As RoamPrime prepares for its next phase of growth, its mission remains simple yet ambitious: bring trust, transparency, and technology to every pre-owned two-wheeler transaction in India.
