Crafting a Global Indian Furniture Brand from Jodhpur’s Artisan Roots

At 18, most entrepreneurs are still figuring out their first business plan. Nandini Udawat, founder of Bhavya Living, was already on the factory floor in Jodhpur, learning the art of woodworking from seasoned artisans. Today, her premium solid wood furniture brand is bootstrapped, turning over one crore in just six months, and eyeing national expansion, exports, and global recognition for Indian craftsmanship.

From Jodhpur’s Workshops to a Founder’s Vision

Nandini’s journey began in Jodhpur, a city known for its rich heritage in furniture and craftsmanship. Surrounded by woodworking units from a young age, she spent hours observing every stage of furniture manufacturing—from raw wood selection to finishing touches. “I was fascinated by how a block of wood could transform into something beautiful and functional,” she recalls. Those early experiences didn’t just teach her about furniture; they instilled a deep respect for the craft, which became the foundation of Bhavya Living’s story.

The Meaning Behind “Bhavya”

The brand name Bhavya—meaning grand, magnificent, and extravagant—reflects Nandini’s vision for the furniture it represents. “Bhavya Living is about luxury through authenticity,” she explains. “It’s not just about looks; it’s about skilled craftsmanship, quality materials, and thoughtful design that adds warmth and timeless beauty to modern living.” Every piece is designed to be a statement—elegant, durable, and rooted in tradition, yet contemporary enough for today’s homes.

Balancing Tradition with Innovation

One of the biggest challenges Nandini faced was evolving traditional craftsmanship to meet modern demands. “We had to preserve the soul of the craft while making it relevant for today’s customer,” she says. This meant:

  • Researching modern design trends while honoring traditional techniques.
  • Maintaining consistent quality across custom orders and bulk supplies.
  • Managing skilled labor in an industry where artisan availability and training are critical.
  • Building a premium brand in a relationship-driven, price-sensitive market.

As a young female entrepreneur in a male-dominated industry, Nandini also had to work harder to prove her credibility and earn trust.

Bootstrapped Growth: From a 2 BHK to Pan-India Supply

Bhavya Living started with market research, exhibitions, and a first sale from a small two BHK apartment. Early customers came through references and social media, and the brand grew organically—without external funding. “We’ve always been bootstrapped,” Nandini says. “Every rupee was reinvested into better materials, skilled labor, and customer experience.”

Today, Bhavya Living supplies furniture across India, with a team that handles measurements, customization, and delivery. The brand’s growth has been driven by word-of-mouth, social media presence, and a relentless focus on quality.

Ethical Sourcing and Artisan Empowerment

At the heart of Bhavya Living is a commitment to ethical sourcing and artisan empowerment. The brand competes on craftsmanship, not price, and ensures that every piece tells a story of skilled hands and quality materials. In Jodhpur, Bhavya Living has set up an experience center where customers can see the craftsmanship firsthand, understand the materials used, and appreciate the value of authentic, handmade furniture. “We want customers to connect with the story behind each piece,” Nandini says.

Funding, Future Plans, and National Expansion

While Bhavya Living has grown without external investment so far, Nandini is now exploring funding options to scale faster. Future plans include:

  • Expanding experience centers in Tier-1 cities.
  • Increasing exports to showcase Indian craftsmanship globally.
  • Exploring new product categories like outdoor, kitchen, and office furniture.
  • Collaborating with designers, architects, and celebrity homes to position Bhavya Living as a lifestyle brand.

The goal is to evolve from a furniture brand into a lifestyle movement—without losing connection to its artisan roots.

Innovation with Authenticity

Innovation at Bhavya Living doesn’t mean abandoning tradition. Instead, it’s about using modern tools and design thinking to help traditional skills reach more people. “We’re using technology for measurements, customization, and customer engagement,” Nandini explains, “but every piece is still crafted by skilled hands.” This balance of old and new is what sets Bhavya Living apart in a crowded market.

Legacy: A Globally Recognized Indian Design Brand

Nandini’s vision for Bhavya Living goes beyond revenue. She wants to:

  • Preserve and celebrate Indian craftsmanship on a global stage.
  • Create opportunities for artisans to gain international recognition.
  • Inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs to build businesses rooted in culture and craftsmanship.

“Success for me isn’t just about building a bigger company,” she says. “It’s about building something that lasts, creates opportunities for others, and leaves a positive impact on the people we work with.”
