Razorpay, NPCI & OpenAI Launch Pilot for Chat-Based Payments in India

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI have joined forces to introduce Agentic Payments, a new digital payment experience that allows users to shop and pay directly through conversational platforms like ChatGPT.

Currently in a pilot phase, Agentic Payments aims to streamline the shopping experience by letting users discover, select, and pay for products without leaving the chat interface. The collaboration leverages Razorpay’s robust payment infrastructure, NPCI’s UPI network—which handles approximately 20 billion transactions monthly—and OpenAI’s conversational AI technology.

The pilot is live with BigBasket, enabling users to order groceries via ChatGPT. For instance, a user can ask to order ingredients for a recipe, explore available options, confirm selections, and complete payment—all within the same chat. Payments are powered by Razorpay’s banking partners, Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, and incorporate advanced UPI features such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay for secure, instant transactions.

The initiative also promises real-time transaction tracking and management. Looking ahead, the partners plan to explore additional features, including personalized checkout experiences and user-initiated automated payments, further integrating conversational AI into India’s digital payments ecosystem.
