Zerodha Pledges ₹2 Crore to The Sustainability Mafia to Cultivate India’s Next Wave of Climate Innovators

The Sustainability Mafia (SusMafia), a prominent non-profit operating under the Sustainability Engine Foundation, has secured ₹2 crore in CSR funding from Zerodha. This strategic investment is designed to fortify India’s climate-tech landscape by bridging the gap between climate education, early-stage startup incubation, and real-world industrial application.

The funding aims to tackle the most significant hurdles in the sector: the scarcity of industry-ready talent and the “valley of death” faced by early-stage founders seeking validation and capital.

Empowering the “Climate Ninjas” and Future Founders

With this fresh infusion of capital, SusMafia plans to scale its proven models for climate impact. The roadmap for the funding includes:

  • Talent Pipeline: Training over 300+ “Climate Ninjas”—professionals equipped with the specific skills needed to navigate and lead in the green economy.

  • Startup Incubation: Providing hands-on support and validation for 20+ early-stage climate-tech startups.

  • Sector Focus: Driving innovation in critical areas such as air quality, water & sanitation, waste management, carbon reduction, and the circular economy.

  • Ecosystem Convening: Organizing regional and national gatherings like SusCrunch to connect founders with corporate partners and institutional investors.

Bridging the Connective Tissue of the Climate Ecosystem

The foundation has already made significant strides, having trained over 400 professionals and deployed ₹1 crore in grants previously. Today, its network comprises over 80+ climate entrepreneurs driving tangible change across India.

Nithin Kamath, CEO of Zerodha, emphasized the importance of early-stage support:

“Strong climate outcomes emerge when founders, practitioners, and learners have access to the right knowledge and support early in their journey. The Sustainability Engine Foundation is building this connective tissue for the climate ecosystem, and we’re pleased to back their work.”

Ganesh, Director of SusMafia, added:

“This grant strengthens our ability to build a community bringing founders, talent, and partners closer as we collectively work to make sustainability the default choice. It enables us to deepen our efforts with greater focus, reach, and impact.”

Strategic Academic & Industry Partnerships

SusMafia’s mission is deeply integrated with India’s top academic institutions to ensure that climate challenges are solved in classrooms and labs before scaling to the market. Key partners include:

  • Academic: ISB, IIT Madras, BITS Pilani, Ashoka University, and the Jaypee Universities (JIIT/JUIT).

  • Industry Innovators: A network featuring high-impact startups like PadCare, Dexler Energy, The Mend Packaging, and Lucro.

Backed by philanthropic heavyweights like Spectrum Impact and Sanghvi Movers, the foundation is set to transform how sustainability is practiced and scaled in India.
