In a candid conversation, Vishesh Rajaram, Managing Partner and Co-founder of Speciale Invest, shared his journey and vision for nurturing India’s deep tech ecosystem. Since founding the firm in 2017, Rajaram has been at the forefront of identifying and supporting transformative early-stage startups in sectors like space, energy, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare.
With a professional background rooted in finance—spanning roles at PricewaterhouseCoopers and ICICI—Rajaram brings a sharp analytical lens to venture capital. However, he emphasizes that beyond numbers, it’s the ability to adapt that truly defines success in the evolving VC landscape. “The venture capital environment in India is rapidly maturing,” he explains. “Adaptability and understanding technological nuances are key to making the right investment calls.”
At Speciale Invest, the firm’s strategy is both focused and disciplined. It provides portfolio companies with 24 months of runway, allowing founders the space to innovate and refine their technologies. Unlike many fast-paced investors, Speciale Invest chooses quality over quantity, making only four to five investments each year. “We want to stay close to the companies we back,” Rajaram shares.
One of the recurring themes Rajaram discussed was the cultural differences in risk perception, which often shape investment patterns in India. He observed that deep tech startups face unique challenges—ranging from long gestation periods to the complexity of translating cutting-edge research into commercially viable solutions. “Strong founding teams with a deep understanding of technology risks are critical,” he said, emphasizing that success in deep tech requires both technical depth and entrepreneurial grit.
When it comes to follow-on investments, Rajaram underscored the importance of data-driven decisions. “We rely heavily on comprehensive analysis before committing additional capital. It’s not just about faith—it’s about evidence,” he remarked.
For emerging fund managers, Rajaram’s advice is grounded yet inspiring: develop patience and tenacity. “Venture capital is a long game. Returns take time, but so does building something meaningful,” he said. “Our goal isn’t just to deliver strong financial performance but also to contribute positively to the ecosystem by empowering innovators solving real problems.”
Through Speciale Invest, Vishesh Rajaram continues to champion India’s frontier technologies—fueling a new generation of entrepreneurs who dare to build what others only imagine.
