Karnataka Tech Startups Raise $4.6 Billion in 9M 2026, Funding Rises 26% Despite 35% Drop in Deals

Technology companies in Karnataka raised $4.6 billion in the first nine months of 2026, marking a 26% increase from the $3.7 billion raised during the corresponding period last year. However, the increase in funding came alongside a significant decline in deal activity, with the number of funding rounds falling 35% to 397 from 610 in the same period of 2025.

According to Tracxn’s Karnataka Tech 9M 2026 Report, which tracks equity funding, investor activity, exits and unicorn creation between January 1 and September 30, 2026, the state’s startup ecosystem is experiencing a shift towards larger funding rounds, with capital increasingly concentrated among established companies.

The funding growth also reflects a recovery from the relatively weaker performance of 2025 rather than a return to the peak levels witnessed during the pandemic-era investment boom.

Karnataka startups had raised $15.4 billion in the first nine months of 2021. The latest figure remains approximately 30% of that peak and is only 5% higher than the $4.4 billion raised during the same period in 2024.

Larger Funding Rounds Drive Capital Growth

Despite the increase in total funding, the decline in the number of transactions highlights a more selective investment environment.

Karnataka recorded 397 funding rounds in 9M 2026, compared with 610 in 9M 2025 and 681 in 9M 2024. This represents a 35% decline year-on-year and a 42% decrease compared with the corresponding period in 2024.

The average funding round size increased to approximately $11.6 million from around $6.1 million a year earlier.

Capital concentration was another defining trend. The ten largest funding rounds collectively attracted approximately $2 billion, accounting for nearly 44% of the total funding raised in the state.

Fintech company CRED’s $540 million Series H round in June, reportedly backed by Meta, was the largest transaction and alone represented approximately 12% of Karnataka’s total funding during the period.

While funding rounds at Series A and later stages declined by just 6%, from 176 to 166, the sharper contraction was concentrated in smaller early-stage transactions.

CRED, Sarvam, Rapido and KreditBee Lead Major Funding Activity

Several large transactions contributed significantly to Karnataka’s funding performance during the first nine months of 2026.

CRED led the list with its $540 million Series H round in June. Bengaluru-based generative AI startup Sarvam followed with a $255 million Series B round in June, backed by HCL Technologies, Bessemer Venture Partners and Peak XV Partners. The company subsequently raised another $90 million in August, with Nvidia among the investors.

Ride-hailing platform Rapido raised $240 million in a Series F round in May, with participation from Prosus, WestBridge Capital and Accel.

Digital lending platform KreditBee also secured $220 million in a Series E funding round in April, led by investors including Motilal Oswal.

These transactions demonstrate the ability of established technology companies to attract substantial institutional capital, even as smaller startups face a more challenging fundraising environment.

Fintech and Enterprise Applications Attract $1.4 Billion Each

Fintech and enterprise applications emerged as the two leading sectors by funding, attracting $1.4 billion each during the nine-month period.

Fintech funding increased 44% year-on-year, while enterprise application investments grew 37%.

Auto technology recorded the sharpest growth among the major sectors. Funding in the segment reached $896 million, representing a 420% increase from $172 million in 9M 2025.

The growth was supported by significant investments in electric mobility and automotive technology companies, including Simple Energy, which raised $180 million in a Series C round in September. Rideriver secured $102 million, while Ultraviolette raised $85 million.

The increase highlights growing investor interest in India’s electric mobility ecosystem and technology-led automotive businesses.

Seed Funding Declines as Early-Stage Startups Face a Tougher Market

While larger companies attracted substantial investments, early-stage startups experienced a more difficult funding environment.

Seed-stage funding in Karnataka fell 32% year-on-year to $281 million from $412 million in 9M 2025. Compared with the $458 million raised during the same period in 2024, the decline stood at 39%.

Seed-stage transactions accounted for 58% of all funding rounds but represented only 6% of the total capital raised. In contrast, late-stage transactions made up 9% of deals while attracting 57% of the funding.

The number of companies receiving institutional funding for the first time also declined sharply by 45%, falling to 86 from 155 a year earlier.

Investor participation showed a similar shift. The number of existing institutional investors active in Karnataka declined 25% to 264 from 350. However, first-time investors increased 10% to 102.

Antler emerged as the most active seed investor with 10 investments, while Peak XV Partners led early-stage activity with nine investments.

The trend is also visible nationally. India’s seed funding declined 37% to $698 million during the period, while the number of first-time funded companies fell 30% to 338.

Karnataka Adds Three Unicorns in 2026

Karnataka produced three new unicorns during the first nine months of 2026: Emergent, Sarvam and KreditBee.

Although the number remained unchanged from the corresponding period last year, the time taken by startups to achieve unicorn status declined significantly.

According to Tracxn, the average time between a Series A funding round and the round that pushed a company beyond a $1 billion valuation fell to 1.7 years in 9M 2026, compared with 8.8 years in 9M 2025.

The average funding raised before reaching unicorn status stood at approximately $130 million.

AI application development startup Emergent crossed the $1 billion valuation mark in July, approximately 0.9 years after its Series A round. The company had raised $100 million before its unicorn round.

At the national level, six startups achieved unicorn status during the period, taking an average of 4.9 years from their Series A funding rounds.

Acquisitions Decline, While IPO Activity Remains Steady

Karnataka’s technology ecosystem recorded 20 acquisitions during 9M 2026, down 49% from 39 transactions in the corresponding period last year.

The average disclosed acquisition value stood at approximately $55 million.

Among the notable transactions, edtech company Unacademy was acquired by upGrad for $222 million. Unacademy had raised approximately $880 million before the transaction.

Other acquisitions included Marico’s purchase of skincare brand Cosmix for $25 million and Meesho’s acquisition of retailer network application Kirana Club for $21 million.

Meanwhile, four technology companies from Karnataka went public during the period, compared with three listings in 9M 2025.

However, the average market capitalisation at listing declined to $522 million from $961 million a year earlier.

Cloud media technology company Amagi led the listings with a market value of $858 million, followed by logistics company Shadowfax at $782 million and rental platform Rentomojo at $438 million.

Amagi and Shadowfax, both of which listed in January, subsequently traded above their respective issue prices. Amagi, which issued shares at ₹361, closed at ₹547.05 on the BSE on Monday, while Shadowfax, which priced its issue at ₹124, closed at ₹272.40.

Bengaluru Accounts for Nearly All Karnataka Tech Funding

One of the most notable findings of the Tracxn report is the concentration of startup funding within Bengaluru.

The report identified Bengaluru, Mysuru and Shivamogga as the top three funded cities in Karnataka, collectively accounting for 100% of the state’s reported funding during 9M 2026.

However, Bengaluru accounted for virtually the entire funding pool, with its share remaining at approximately 100%, consistent with the previous year.

Mysuru ranked second with $8 million in funding, driven largely by quick-commerce startup BazaarNow. Shivamogga recorded $154,000, followed by Belgaum with $107,000 and Mangaluru with $81,000.

The concentration is also evident over the longer term. Bengaluru-based technology companies have raised approximately $87.1 billion out of the $87.3 billion attracted by Karnataka’s technology ecosystem since Tracxn began tracking the data.

Karnataka’s Startup Ecosystem Faces a Changing Funding Landscape

The latest funding figures reflect a changing investment environment for Karnataka’s technology ecosystem. While overall capital raised has increased, the decline in deal volumes and seed-stage investments indicates that funding is becoming increasingly concentrated among companies with stronger growth trajectories and established business models.

Fintech, enterprise applications and auto technology continue to attract significant investor interest, while AI-led startups are also demonstrating their ability to secure large funding rounds and achieve unicorn valuations.

However, the concentration of capital in Bengaluru and the decline in first-time funded companies highlight challenges around geographical diversification and early-stage funding access.

As Karnataka’s startup ecosystem moves into the final quarter of 2026, the balance between large-scale investments, early-stage innovation and broader regional participation will remain important indicators of its long-term growth.
