Founder to Fund Builder: Ashutosh Kumar Jha on Building a Global Venture Firm Rooted in Execution

In a conversation with Indian Startup Times, Ashutosh Kumar Jha, General Partner & CEO at Expert Dojo, shared his journey from building asymmetric market opportunities as a founder to leading a globally active venture capital firm—and how his operator-first perspective shapes how he supports founders across markets.

For Ashutosh, venture capital is ultimately about helping founders execute with clarity, discipline, and long-term thinking.

From a Small Town in India to the Global Venture Stage

Ashutosh’s journey began in a small town in Bihar before expanding across global markets through education, entrepreneurship, and investment leadership. Experiencing both emerging and developed ecosystems gave him a broad perspective on how founders build under different constraints and opportunities.

Before becoming an investor, he built an e-commerce company in India’s construction industry focused on digitizing distribution and improving access across fragmented supply chains. Managing operations, logistics, credit, and customer acquisition firsthand gave him a deep appreciation for execution discipline.

That experience continues to shape his investment approach.

“Building a company teaches you how important clarity, execution, and resilience are. Those lessons stay with you as an investor,” he said.

Building a Venture Firm with an Operator’s Mindset

At Expert Dojo, Ashutosh has helped build a venture firm that combines capital with structured operational support. The firm makes early-stage investments and continues supporting companies as they grow and strengthen execution.

Expert Dojo has invested in more than 300 companies globally, working with founders across the United States, India, Africa, Southeast Asia, and other high-growth markets.

The firm maintains a structured engagement model, supporting founders on areas such as go-to-market strategy, customer acquisition, organizational clarity, governance, and scaling execution.

“Our role is to be a long-term partner to founders. Capital is important, but helping founders build strong, durable companies is equally important,” Ashutosh explained.

Supporting Companies Through Structured Execution

Ashutosh highlighted BHive as an example of India’s new generation of professionally built companies. BHive, a rapidly growing managed office and coworking platform, has been expanding its footprint and strengthening its institutional readiness as it continues to scale. Expert Dojo was among the early investors supporting the company during its growth journey.

He noted that BHive reflects the broader quality and maturity emerging within India’s startup ecosystem.

Beyond BHive, Expert Dojo has invested in several Indian startups across sectors, including companies such as Mugafi, Zippee, and others building across enterprise, consumer, and technology-driven platforms. The firm’s India portfolio continues to expand and reflects strong founder quality and sector diversity.

Ashutosh emphasized that India will remain a central focus for Expert Dojo’s long-term investment strategy.

“We have backed strong founders across India and continue to see meaningful opportunities across sectors. We remain committed to supporting founders as long-term partners in this ecosystem,” he said.

Strengthening the Foundations: Clarity, Discipline, and Support

Through his experience working with founders globally, Ashutosh has observed that building a successful company requires strong fundamentals beyond just product innovation. Clear storytelling, disciplined financial management, and thoughtful long-term decision-making play a critical role as companies scale.

Maintaining clear financial structures and governance early helps founders operate with greater confidence and prepares companies for future growth.

Equally important is the ability to communicate vision and progress effectively. Narrative clarity helps teams, investors, and stakeholders stay aligned around long-term goals.

He believes founders benefit greatly from having trusted partners and structured support as they navigate the complexities of scaling companies.

Building Long-Term Bridges Between India and Global Markets

Ashutosh is actively focused on strengthening investment and operational connections between India and global startup ecosystems.

Through Expert Dojo’s global network, the firm supports Indian founders in accessing international markets, capital, and strategic guidance, while also helping companies expand across geographies.

He believes India is uniquely positioned to produce globally competitive companies, supported by strong technical talent, growing domestic demand, and increasing global integration.

“Our goal is to support founders in India while helping them connect to global opportunities and scale with confidence,” he said.

Capital and Operational Support Working Together

Ashutosh believes founders benefit most when capital is paired with thoughtful, structured support. This includes helping founders strengthen execution processes, maintain governance clarity, and stay closely aligned with customer needs.

Customer focus, he noted, remains fundamental.

“Companies that stay close to their customers and execute consistently are the ones that build lasting value,” he said.

India’s Growing Role in Global Innovation

Ashutosh is optimistic about India’s role in the global venture landscape. He sees strong founder ambition, improving capital access, and increasing global integration as key drivers of long-term growth.

India is producing founders who are building not just for domestic markets, but with global relevance.

“India has the talent, the market, and the ambition. We are seeing founders here build companies with global potential,” he said.

Expert Dojo continues to expand its presence in India, supporting founders locally while connecting them with global capital and networks.

Advice to Founders: Focus on Execution and Customers

Ashutosh encourages founders to focus on building strong fundamentals and staying aligned with customer needs.

Clear execution, disciplined governance, and long-term thinking create the foundation for sustainable growth.

“Great companies are built step by step. Staying focused on customers and execution is what ultimately creates lasting businesses,” he said.

Building for the Long Term

Today, Ashutosh continues to lead Expert Dojo’s global investment efforts while expanding the firm’s presence in India and other high-growth markets.

His journey—from a small town in India to leading a global venture capital firm—reflects the growing global reach of Indian founders and investors.

Much of this global expansion has been shaped alongside his partner, Brian Mac Mahon, whose strong conviction in India’s long-term potential and shared commitment to building founder-first investment initiatives have played an important role in shaping Expert Dojo’s direction in the region.

As the venture ecosystem continues to evolve, Ashutosh remains focused on a simple principle: support founders with clarity, discipline, and long-term partnership.
