Introduction
Senora Asset Management is a boutique asset management firm founded by Mridul Jalan. The firm was built with a clear and focused idea : to create a large-cap, India-dedicated, long-only investment strategy aimed at long-term wealth creation.
When Mridul Jalan began his investing journey in the mid-1990s, a common belief in the market was that large-cap stocks do not create meaningful wealth and that the real money lies in small and mid-cap companies. With over 25 years of experience, he observed this narrative closely. Senora was launched to address what he sees as a gap in the market which is a strong, actively managed large-cap strategy that can consistently deliver results over time.
The Gap in India’s Asset Management Ecosystem
According to Mridul Jalan, Senora aims to address the lack of a truly active, focused large-cap fund that can consistently outperform the index by 5 to 10 percent across market cycles. He believes that no other strategy has been able to achieve this level of consistent outperformance.
The firm’s approach is centered around disciplined, long-term investing in large-cap companies, with the goal of building sustainable wealth rather than chasing short-term gains.
An Unpopular Investing Narrative
One popular investing narrative that Mridul Jalan strongly disagrees with is the idea that investing is only about returns. He believes investing is first about choosing the right place and the right strategy. Returns, according to him, are a result of following the right process over time. If the strategy is sound and disciplined, the returns will naturally follow. Short-term performance should not be the only focus.
Funding and Backing
Since asset management is not a capital-intensive business in the traditional startup sense, Senora has not raised large public funding rounds. However, the firm has received an undisclosed amount of private funding from notable investor Ajinkya Rahane, the Indian international cricketer, along with support from friends and family.
The Hardest Challenge in Building the Firm
For Mridul Jalan, the biggest challenge in building Senora has been attracting the right talent.
He explains that talent is not just about qualifications or experience. It is also about mindset. Working in a startup or entrepreneurial environment requires a different approach compared to working in a large, established organisation. Many young professionals today prefer stability and consistent income, which can make it harder for startups to build strong teams. Finding people who are willing to take risks and grow with the company remains one of the toughest challenges.
Why He Started After Gaining Experience
While many founders today start companies early in their careers, Mridul Jalan chose to build considerable experience before launching Senora. He says, “I always had an entrepreneurial spirit even as a teenager but I knew that managing other people’s money would need me to show a high level of responsibility.” He wanted to ensure that when he stepped into the business of managing funds, he was fully prepared. His decision to start later was therefore a calculated one, rooted in learning and preparation.
Advice for Young Professionals in Asset Management
For those looking to build a career in asset management, Mridul Jalan highlights three key qualities. First, the ability to understand market cycles. Second, a strong grasp of both macro and micro factors. And third, patience. Understanding how strategies perform across different timeframes and market conditions is crucial. In asset management, discipline and long-term thinking are just as important as technical knowledge.
