Choosing the right career path remains one of the most critical yet confusing decisions for students and professionals alike. Societal expectations, parental pressures, and lack of structured guidance often lead to choices that do not align with individual interests, causing dissatisfaction and mental health challenges.
To understand how this challenge is being addressed, we sat down with Nikhar Arora, co-founder of Mentoria, a platform designed to help individuals discover and pursue careers aligned with their strengths and aspirations. In this conversation, Nikhar shared his journey, the inspiration behind Mentoria, and his vision for the future of career guidance in India and beyond.
From Exploring Multiple Careers to Building Mentoria
Nikhar’s career journey has been diverse—ranging from an early aspiration to become a pilot, to exploring filmmaking, and later building a career in advertising. “Through all these experiences, I realized how unclear most students are about career choices. Many decisions are driven more by societal expectations than personal interest,” Nikhar explained.
This realization led him to undertake the Bharat Samjho Yatra, a national research project that revealed how widespread confusion was in career decision-making. The insights from this initiative laid the foundation for Mentoria, with a mission to bring clarity and structured guidance to individuals at every stage of their career.
The Importance of Career Clarity
According to Nikhar, career clarity is central to professional and personal fulfillment. “We have to move away from the mindset of one lifetime career. With the evolving job landscape, individuals will need to adapt, reskill, and even switch paths every few years,” he said.
He emphasized that career development should be viewed in the same way as physical health—something that requires continuous attention, mentorship, and investment.
How Mentoria Works
Mentoria’s approach is designed to provide end-to-end career guidance. It begins with detailed psychometric assessments that highlight an individual’s strengths and interests. These are followed by personalized sessions with trained career counselors who guide individuals on possible paths.
The platform also provides access to industry mentors, giving mentees an opportunity to understand real-world expectations, required skills, and potential growth in specific fields. Additionally, AI-powered tools are integrated into the platform to assist with skill-building, job applications, and career exploration.
“AI can enhance the efficiency of career counseling, but human mentorship remains irreplaceable because it brings empathy, trust, and lived experience,” Nikhar highlighted.
Impact and Scale
In the last few years, Mentoria has worked with over 3.5 lakh students and professionals, 240 organisations, and built a network of 1,600+ counsellor-preneurs across 50+ cities. Through CSR initiatives like Mission 5000 and the Daughter’s Day Futures Fund, more than 15,000 underprivileged girls—from farmer’s daughters to survivors of trafficking—have already accessed structured career mentorship.
A defining innovation has been Mentoria’s ‘counsellor-preneur’ network. Instead of centralising everything, Mentoria enables educators, psychologists, and coaches to build their own local practices under a shared ecosystem. They take Mentoria’s science-backed tools into schools, corporates, NGOs, and even town-level communities—creating one of the first distributed counselling forces in the country.
Harnessing AI: The Arya Pilot
Mentoria is also piloting Arya, India’s first AI-powered job discovery agent. Imagine an assistant that scans thousands of openings, tailors your CV, and applies on your behalf—all while learning from your career goals.
“Arya isn’t here to replace human mentors,” Nikhar clarified. “It ensures that people never miss opportunities because of information gaps or process inefficiencies. The counsellor then focuses on what AI can’t replicate: empathy, judgment, and context.”
Success Stories that Redefine Possibilities
Nikhar shared the example of Rahul, a mentee who discovered his passion for VFX after going through Mentoria’s program. With proper guidance and long-term mentorship, Rahul was able to build a successful career in the field.
“Stories like these show how the right guidance can transform confusion into clarity, and hesitation into confidence,” Nikhar said.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
Introducing career mentorship as a structured service in India has not been without challenges. “Initially, many people saw career counseling as a non-essential service. Changing that mindset required consistent effort,” Nikhar admitted.
Despite these challenges, Mentoria has made significant strides in reaching thousands of students and professionals across India. The company’s immediate focus remains on scaling its impact in the Indian market, with the long-term goal of expanding globally.
The Future of Careers and Mentorship
Nikhar believes the future of careers will be shaped by rapid technological advancements, requiring individuals to frequently update their skills and adapt to new opportunities. He also stressed that career clarity can no longer be treated as a one-time college decision.
“With AI reshaping industries, the average professional will change tracks every 5–7 years. Career clarity needs to be treated like healthcare—you don’t do a one-off check-up at 17 and assume you’ll stay healthy forever. You monitor, adapt, and invest in it for life.”
He also warned that while India has the largest youth population in the world, it also faces one of the biggest mismatches between education and employability. “If we don’t solve career clarity, our demographic dividend risks turning into a liability. My vision isn’t just scaling Mentoria; it’s about helping define ‘careertech’ as a category—the way fintech or edtech emerged a decade ago. And I believe India can lead that conversation globally.”
Conclusion
Our conversation with Nikhar Arora highlighted not just his personal journey, but also the broader importance of structured career guidance in today’s fast-changing world. Through Mentoria, he and his team are building a platform that addresses one of the most critical gaps in education and professional development—helping individuals discover and pursue careers that truly align with who they are.
